I have a modded original Xbox in my AV stack. This box runs XBMC at boot up and is my 'media player'. Once I have my HTPC in situ under the TV, this will become the media player box, so I tried out the Windows version of XBMC. It works quite well and can autoplay DVDs with MP3s on them upon insertion in the drive.
Read more about XBMC here: http://xbmc.org/
I will have explore MP a bit more to see what it is capable of, to decide whether to run XBMC on start up instead of it.
I have not gotten very far with MP recently, due to the 'timeshifting when changing channels' problem, but I think I have solved it now (see MP forum thread here). I was afraid that this problem and the fact that it caused changing of channel to be extremely slow, was due to the lack of performance of the P4 CPU + mobo.
